What qualifications do you need for PAT testing?
No specific qualifications are required, the regulations only require the testing to be done by a competent person. The definition of a competent person in the regulations is – “A person possessing sufficient technical knowledge or experience to be capable of ensuring that injury is prevented”.
Do you need to be trained to use a PAT tester?
As long as you’re deemed competent to do so, absolutely anyone can check electrical appliances for safety. The most commonly accepted way to be deemed competent is to take a PAT training course and be presented with a Certificate of Competency in PAT testing. Previous electrical training is not essential.

PAT testing usually takes about 1 hour to complete. In that time, an engineer will usually perform around 30 tests. To ensure everything runs smoothly, make sure appliances and equipment are easy for the engineer to access and that no walkways are obstructed.
