When Should bees use Apiguard?

When Should bees use Apiguard?

A: Apiguard is best applied in summer or autumn, outside the period of honeyflow. The external temperature should be above 59°F, which means that the colony is active.

Can Apiguard be used with honey supers on?

Apiguard may taint honey in supers, but it is unlikely, especially if the honey stores are sealed. Apiguard may taint the brood wax, and low traces may reach the wax of the supers. Honey collected during Apiguard treatment can be fed back to the bees.

Can you feed bees while using Apiguard?

Q: Can I feed my colonies whilst using Apiguard? A: Yes and No. The recommendation is not to apply Apiguard whilst feeding simultaneously in case the bees spend all their time taking the feed and not bothering to clean out the Apiguard gel.

What is Apiguard used for?

Apiguard® is a natural treatment to control varroa mite populations in honeybee colonies. Tests show that Apiguard also helps to control tracheal mites / Acarine and chalkbrood.

Does thymol taint honey?

Thymol is not approved for the treatment of Nosema. Not only is thymol ineffective against Nosema whether prophylactically or otherwise but it can taint any honey that is on the colony. There are very strict food safety guidelines concerning residues in honey and the Food Standards Agency take a strict line.

Is Apiguard poisonous to humans?

: Causes irreversible eye damage. Harmful if swallowed or absorbed through skin. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing.

How effective is Apivar?

Apivar has a 99% efficiency rate against honey bee colony mites. It is released continuously in the hive at a constant rate for 6 weeks. Apivar comes in form of strips that you place in your brood boxes. The strips are best used at a rate of 1 strip for every 5 brood frames in your beehive.

Is Apivar toxic to humans?

Researchers have found there is little risk of toxicity for bees or for humans directly (during treatment), or indirectly (through hive products), exposed to amitraz in Apivar strips.

Can I use Apivar with supers on?

Will Apivar kill mites if you have supers on your hive? Yes, it will.

When should I apply for Apivar?

Apivar strips work best in the early Spring (2 months before the start of the honey season) and the Fall. Since you have to take the honey supers off of the hive, using the strips in the Fall can be difficult. See the section below about what to do if you have honey supers on your hive and nowhere to store the honey.

Can I leave supers on over Winter?

Yes, you can leave a honey super or several on the hive over Winter. In fact, most beekeepers do have a super or two designated for use by the bees. The size of the box designated as the “food super” for the bees varies from one beekeeper to another and from one region to another.

How much apiguard is needed to treat nuclei?

A: To treat nuclei or small/weak colonies treat with only 1 x 25g Apiguard – no more than this. For small nuclei reduce this to half again (1 x 12.5g approx). Small (e.g. less than 5 frames) or weak colonies may not tolerate a 50g Apiguard dose and brood may be removed by the workers.

How does the apiguard gel work on bees?

Worker bees climb into the Apiguard tray, remove the gel as a hive-cleaning behaviour and distribute it throughout the colony. The gel sticks to the bees’ body hairs and, as the bees move through the hive, particles are left throughout the hive.

What do you put in a 10 pack of apiguard?

Varroa mites (external parasite) are a destructive pest that has no place in your hive. Kick them out with Apigaurd, a thymol-based miticide suitable for natural use. A 10 pack will treat 5 hives. Need a larger quantity?

When is the best time to apply apiguard?

A: Apiguard is best applied in summer or autumn, outside the period of honeyflow. The external temperature should be above 59°F, which means that the colony is active.
